Does the firm need to be in my state?
No. Employee benefit plan audits are performed under national standards (GAAS and Department of Labor rules), and most established practices audit plans in dozens of states — records are pulled from the recordkeeper and payroll systems, not a filing cabinet. Sponsors often still prefer a firm with a real footprint in their state for time-zone alignment, on-site walkthroughs, and familiarity with regional payroll providers. The state tables show exactly which firms have that footprint, by count of signed audits.
